Trump seeks cooperation with Romania on critical minerals - 1

The US Embassy in Bucharest published a message on the Ex platform today, highlighting US President Donald Trump's strong commitment to working with Romania on secure supplies of essential minerals, BTA reported.

"President Trump is firmly committed to working with our international partners, including Romania, to ensure reliable supplies of essential minerals needed to support our defense, energy, and technology sectors," the message reads.

Another post, uploaded to the embassy's official Facebook page, states:

„The United States and the countries participating in the Ministerial Meeting on Critical Minerals, including Romania, emphasize that safe and reliable supply chains are essential to shared economic and national security and reaffirm their commitment to cooperate on strengthening this strategic sector“.

The message comes in the context in which the US convened dozens of foreign ministers, including Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Coiu, and senior officials from allied countries to conclude agreements aimed at reducing dependence on critical minerals from China.

The meeting in Washington aims to strengthen international cooperation in ensuring secure and diversified supply chains at the bilateral level, as well as at the EU-US level, the Romanian Foreign Ministry said on the eve of the event. A strategic approach is being sought in this area, and proposals for trade partnerships to facilitate strategic investments in the field of rare minerals will be discussed throughout the year.

The issue is a top priority for Washington after Beijing imposed restrictions on the export of so-called rare earth elements last year, Romanian media commented. The restrictions were put on hold in October as part of a deal between Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, but US officials are now determined to make quick progress on the issue.
