The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting late Saturday night due to the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East. The meeting was provoked by the massive attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as by the subsequent retaliatory strikes by Tehran.
The meeting will begin at 4:00 p.m. local time in New York, which is equivalent to 11:00 p.m. Bulgarian time.
The ambassadors of France and Bahrain are among the main initiators of the convening of the highest security body of the world organization, BTA reported, citing the Israeli delegation to the UN. According to independent international sources, Russia, China and Colombia have also joined the official request.
"The current escalation is dangerous for everyone and must stop," said French President Emmanuel Macron, quoted by Reuters.
The main topic of discussion will be the situation in the Middle East and the search for an immediate diplomatic solution to the crisis. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to present a report on the security situation in the region and call on the warring parties to cease fire.
The international community expresses serious concern that the continued exchange of military strikes could lead to a full-scale regional conflict with unpredictable consequences for world peace.
