Applause can be heard in neighborhoods of the Iranian capital Tehran, and residents went out to their windows to clap and play festive music after reports of the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, AFP reported.

According to witnesses and audio recordings, the celebrations began shortly after 11:00 p.m. local time.

Earlier today, Israeli television reported that US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were shown a photo of Khamenei's body.

Netanyahu said in an address to the nation that there were many signs that Khamenei "is gone".

"A photo of the body was shown to Netanyahu and Trump", Israel's "Channel 12" reported.

"Senior Israeli officials have been informed of Khamenei's assassination. His body was pulled from under the rubble of his residence," reported Israeli state broadcaster "Kan".

Today, Israel and the United States launched air strikes on Iran, which responded with missiles against Israeli cities and Middle Eastern countries with American military bases. One of the first targets hit in the war was Khamenei's residence in Tehran.

However, Iran reported that the supreme ayatollah had been evacuated "to a safe place," but there were no photos or videos to confirm this information. The Iranian supreme leader's office accused Israel and the United States of "psychological warfare."

Trump told NBC about the report of Ali Khamenei's death: "We believe the story is true."

He told ABC that the American strikes "have already done so much damage" and that "a large portion" of the Iranian leadership had been destroyed.

"We don't know about all of them, but most of them are," Trump said, adding that the United States has a "very good idea" who the next Iranian leaders are. which will be hit.

"I have a clear idea of who can take over in Iran", Trump stressed.

In front of "Axios", Trump indicated that he made the decision to strike after the Iranians had protracted the burnouts on their nuclear weapons and missile programs.

"I can go ahead and finish the whole thing or we can stop in two or three days and tell the Iranians: "We'll see you again in a few years if you start rebuilding your nuclear program," Trump said about the possibilities for de-escalation.
