The Qatari Ministry of Defense announced that the largest US military base in the Middle East – – "Al Udeid" was hit by an Iranian ballistic missile, DPA reported, BTA reported.
The defense ministry's statement said that Iran had fired two ballistic missiles at Qatar. "Air defense systems successfully intercepted one of the missiles, and the second hit the Qatari base "Al Udeid", the text states.
The ministry notes that no people were injured in the strike, but it is not clear whether there was any material damage.
"Al Udeid" is one of the most important US bases in the Middle East and is located on the outskirts of Doha. About 10,000 military and civilian personnel are usually stationed at "Al Udeid". The base also serves as a command center for US military operations in the region.
Iran also attacked "Al Udeid" during the 12-day war in June last year.
The US military is deploying B-52 long-range strategic bombers to its military operations in Iran, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said yesterday, quoted by Reuters.
CENTCOM said this began in the first 48 to 72 hours after the start of Operation "Epic Fury" on Saturday. The B-52 bombers can carry bunker-busting bombs, Reuters notes. The US Central Command also reported that in 72 hours, US forces in Iran had attacked over 1,700 targets.
