NATO spokeswoman Alison Hart said that the Alliance condemns Iran's targeting of Turkey after the interception of an Iranian ballistic missile aimed at Turkish airspace today, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
„NATO stands firmly behind all allies, including Turkey, as Iran continues its indiscriminate attacks in the region. "Our position in all areas related to defense and deterrence remains firm, including in cases where air and missile defense are involved," Hart added.
Earlier today, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced the interception of the ballistic missile in a statement, in which it indicated that there were no casualties or injuries as a result of the incident and recalled that Turkey "has the right to respond to any hostile attitude directed at the country." It is not clear from the statement of the Turkish Ministry of Defense whether the Iranian missile was fired specifically at Turkey.
According to diplomatic sources quoted by TRT Haber, after the incident, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan spoke by phone with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi. According to the cited sources, during the conversation, Fidan paid particular attention to the rise in tensions in the region and stressed the need to avoid any steps that could lead to the spread of the conflict.
