A ship seized by Sweden in its territorial waters in the Baltic Sea was sailing under a false flag and is suspected of violating maritime law and the Swedish Ship Safety Act, Reuters reported, citing confirmation from Swedish police.
A crew member has been notified of the alleged violation of national and international laws, Johan Andersson, deputy head of the Swedish police operations department, told a news conference.
Swedish police and the coast guard have taken control of the Guinea-flagged vessel "Kafa" off southern Sweden, saying the vessel's registration status is unclear and the ship is suspected of being of no particular country. An investigation has also been launched into alleged violations of maritime law.
Most of the 11 crew members on the 96-meter cargo ship "Kafa" are Russian, according to the vessel tracking website "MarinTraffic", Anderson said.
