Temporary deployment of US refueling aircraft, surveillance equipment and satellite communication equipment at the “Mihail Kogalniceanu“ air base near Constanta in Romania in the context of the war in Iran was discussed today at the meeting of the Supreme National Defense Council due to the situation in the Middle East. This was announced by Romanian President Nikosor Dan immediately after the meeting. The head of state's statement was broadcast live on the Internet, BTA reported.
“The equipment is defensive. This is equipment that increases Romania's security. I assure Romanians that they have no reason to worry. Their country is safe“, emphasized Nikusor Dan.
He specified that the decision must be voted on in parliament and that a debate on the topic is expected later in the afternoon.
If the equipment is deployed in Romania, it will be based on the partnership agreement with the United States, added the head of state.
“Similar cooperation is also carried out by other NATO countries“, specified Nikusor Dan.
He also informed that so far nearly 5,700 Romanians have been returned to the country from the Middle East region with the help of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Today at the council, we also discussed the political side of this conflict. Romania, together with European countries, is trying through diplomatic channels to stop this war“, added the president.
