Turkey plans to deploy eight large reactors in addition to the four being built at the Akkuyu NPP - 1

Turkey plans to deploy eight large reactors - four each in Sinop and Thrace, in addition to the four reactors already under construction at the country's first nuclear power plant - the Akkuyu NPP, announced Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar from Paris, quoted by the Turkish state television TRT Haber, BTA reported.

Bayraktar stressed that he had held meetings with representatives of South Korea and Canada on this issue and cooperation with them is on the agenda.

„Turkey plans to deploy eight large reactors in addition to those currently being built at the Akkuyu NPP – four in Sinop and four in Thrace,“ Turkey's energy minister told reporters.

Turkey is building its first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, Mersin district (southeastern Turkey) in partnership with the Russian company “Rosatom“. It is also planned to build nuclear power plants with small modular reactors in Sinop and Thrace. The goal is for Turkey's nuclear power generation capacity to reach 20,000 megawatts by 2050.

Bayraktar stressed to reporters that negotiations on nuclear energy with various countries are continuing, and that Turkey will cooperate with France - it is expected that French companies will be involved in the supply of equipment for the “Akkuyu“ nuclear power plant and to conduct independent tests of the nuclear power plant. Turkey has also discussed with France the construction of a new nuclear power plant or a plant with small modular reactors.

Bayraktar stressed that Turkey currently has no problem with energy supplies, and its sources are diversified. According to the energy minister, the turbulence in the world oil and gas markets shows that Turkey's energy strategy is correct, but its implementation needs to be accelerated. Bayraktar predicted that with economic growth and population growth, energy consumption will also increase.

He said that there are already 400 thousand electric cars in the country, and the goal is to have them reach 6 million by 2035. This accordingly means the construction of additional power stations, the energy minister specified.

Within the framework of the summit in Paris, Turkey's energy minister held bilateral meetings, including one with the chairman of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi.
