A solution to security problems in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz can only be achieved through diplomacy, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful said during a visit to Turkey. His words were quoted by "Reuters".
"A reliable and sustainable solution can only be achieved through diplomatic channels. That is why I believe we must unite our common interests both in the Persian Gulf region and here in our neighborhood," he said at a joint press conference with his Turkish counterpart.
The statement comes amid a sharp escalation of tensions around the Strait of Hormuz - a key maritime corridor for oil exports from the Middle East. In response to the US-Israeli strikes on Iran, Tehran launched attacks on commercial ships in the strait.
This led to an almost complete halt in the transit of non-Iranian vessels through the waterway and forced a number of producers in the region to reduce oil production.
According to Wadeful, the international community must simultaneously seek a way out of the war and begin to develop the foundations of a future security system in the region. "Together we must find a way out of this war and at the same time start to build an initial idea of what the future security architecture in the region could look like," the German foreign minister said.
