US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant ruled out the possibility that any cost of the war in Iran would force him to tell US President Donald Trump that the conflict is “no longer within Washington”s means.
“Absolutely not”, Besant replied to a question on the subject in an interview with Sky News.
According to the Treasury Secretary, the operation in Iran has cost the US approximately $ 11 billion so far.
On March 12, The New York Times reported a new Pentagon estimate for Congress on the cost of the operation in Iran. According to it, the US costs for the first week of the conflict amounted to $ 11.3 billion. That figure does not include the costs of building up a military presence in the region before the strikes, the newspaper noted.
The newspaper previously reported that the Pentagon had estimated that the first week of the war with Iran had cost the United States approximately $6 billion. About $4 billion of that was spent on munitions, mostly interceptors to destroy Iranian missiles.
Trump has said that the operation in Iran, which began on February 28, would last four to six weeks. On March 11, he told Axios that the war with Iran would end “soon“ because “there is virtually nothing left to attack“.
