In the city of Moron, Cuba, a group of protesters vandalized the local office of the Communist Party, according to the newspaper Invasor.
This happened after a rally sparked by residents' dissatisfaction with access to food and power outages.
Protesters in Cuba threw stones at the entrance to the local party office, carried furniture from the reception area and set it on fire in the street. A state-run pharmacy and a grocery store were also attacked. Footage posted on social media shows people smashing windows and chanting “Freedom!”.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, on social media platform X, called the protesters' complaints and demands legitimate and their frustration with the power outages understandable. However, he warned that authorities would not tolerate violence and vandalism that threaten public peace.
In February, US President Donald Trump decided to extend for another year the executive order that allows US authorities to detain and inspect vessels, both US and foreign, heading to Cuba.
Earlier, Trump declared a national emergency in the US due to the threat to national security posed by Cuba.
