There is no risk to US President Donald Trump's meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. But it could be delayed, White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said in an interview with Fox News today, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.
Levitt added that Trump is in talks with his European allies and many other countries about opening the Strait of Hormuz.
The US president said yesterday in an interview with the "Financial Times" that he may even postpone his summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month, as he insists that Beijing help unblock this key waterway.
"It is natural for the people who benefit from the strait to help ensure that nothing bad happens there," Trump said, noting that Europe and China are heavily dependent on Gulf oil, unlike the United States.
"If there is no answer or if the answer is no, I think it would be very bad for the future of NATO," he added.
Trump made the comments in a phone call with the "Financial Times" a day after he called on China, France, Japan, South Korea and Britain to join a "joint effort" to open the strait, through which a fifth of the world's oil trade passes.
