UN launches investigation into deadly attack on girls' school in Iran that killed 168 schoolgirls - 1

The UN has launched an investigation into the fatal attack on a primary school in the Iranian city of Minab, carried out on the first day of US-Israeli attacks on Iran, Reuters reported, citing one of the members of the investigation, BTA reported.

The attack on the “Shajara Tayebeh“ school consisted of two consecutive missile strikes that killed 168 schoolgirls, mostly girls, Iranian officials said yesterday.

US military investigators believe US forces may be to blame, but have not reached a final conclusion and have not closed the investigation. The Pentagon has since upgraded the level of the investigation.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation&rdash;, said Max du Plessis – member of the UN fact-finding mission on Iran, at a press conference in Geneva. He said he had credible information corroborating the death toll reported by Iran.

“It is clear to us that regardless of the consequences of such an event, given the innocent victims, there is a significant need for such an investigation, as well as for an independent outcome,“ he added.

If the US is found guilty, this would be among the most horrific cases of civilian casualties from a US strike in the Middle East in decades.
