After the war! Tehran wants a new protocol for the Strait of Hormuz - 1

Iran's position against the development of nuclear weapons will not change significantly, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said, quoted by "Reuters" and "Al Jazeera".

He specified that the new supreme leader has not yet expressed his opinion publicly on the matter.

Former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the start of the US-Israeli war against Iran, opposed the development of weapons of mass destruction in a fatwa, or religious edict, issued at the turn of the century.

Western countries, including the US and Israel, have for years accused Tehran of trying to create nuclear weapons, while Iranian authorities say their nuclear program is solely for civilian purposes.

Araqchi pointed out that fatwas depend on the Islamic jurist who issued them, and added that he was not yet in a position to judge the jurisprudence or political views of Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's new supreme leader.

The Iranian foreign minister expressed confidence that after the end of the war, the countries bordering the Persian Gulf should draft a new protocol for the Strait of Hormuz to ensure that safe passage through the narrow waterway is carried out under certain conditions that meet Iranian and regional interests.

Iran has closed the vital energy route through which 1/5 of the world's oil and liquefied gas passes, threatening that "it will not allow even a liter of oil" to reach the US, Israel and their partners.

Yesterday, the speaker of the Iranian parliament wrote in X that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz will not return to its pre-war state.

The US is seeking to build a naval coalition to escort ships sailing through the strait, but most NATO allies have said they do not want to intervene in military operations against Iran.

France, a member of the Alliance, indicated that it would consider a joint international coalition to secure passage through the strait only after a ceasefire and preliminary negotiations with Tehran.

Araqchi said that an end to the war is possible only if the conflict is finally over in the entire region and Iran receives compensation for the damage caused.

On the issue of Iranian strikes in the Persian Gulf, targeting not only US military bases but also residential or commercial areas, the Iranian Foreign Minister explained that this was due to the relocation of US forces to urban areas.

"Wherever US forces gather, wherever there are their facilities, they were targeted. It is possible that some of these places are close to urban areas," the senior Iranian diplomat noted.

Araqchi acknowledged that countries in the region were "upset and their people were worried" by the Iranian strikes, but added that the blame for starting the war on February 28 lay entirely with the US.
