Former US special counsel Robert Mueller, who led the investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the US presidential election, has died at the age of 81, the American television channel MS Now reported.

According to his sources, Mueller, who was FBI director from 2001 to 2013, died on March 20. The cause of death has not yet been determined. He had suffered from Parkinson's disease for many years.

US President Donald Trump said he was pleased with Mueller's death.

„Robert Mueller just died. Good. I'm glad he's dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people,” the American leader wrote in Truth Social.

In 2016, US intelligence agencies accused Russia of interfering in the US election process. Mueller was responsible for investigating these alleged attempts to influence. On April 18, 2019, the US Department of Justice published his final report, in which the special counsel admitted that he had found no cooperation between Donald Trump, who won the 2016 presidential election, and Russia.

Trump, who is up for re-election in 2025, has repeatedly denied any improper contacts with Russian officials. Moscow has also dismissed allegations of its attempts to influence the US election as unfounded.
