The victims of the avalanche in the northern Italian province of South Tyrol are now three, after a woman who was seriously injured in the accident died in hospital today, local authorities announced, quoted by DPA, BTA reported.
The avalanche affected about twenty skiers at an altitude of nearly 2,450 meters, mountain rescue services announced. Some of the skiers managed to get out of the snow, but nearly 10 others were dragged, and in some cases even buried several meters under the snow.
A 62-year-old mountain guide from South Tyrol and a 56-year-old man were found dead at the scene, while a 26-year-old Italian woman, who was also found, later died in hospital.
Several of the trapped skiers were equipped with rescue sensors, which facilitated rescue operations.
More than 60 rescuers were sent to the scene by helicopter.
With this incident, the number of victims who died in avalanche accidents in Europe this winter season since October last year has reached 128 people.
