Cyprus faces water crisis - 1

The scope of measures to limit water consumption in Cyprus has been expanded, the DPA agency reported, citing information from the island's authorities. They announced that the water pressure in the popular tourist city of Larnaca has already been reduced and an information campaign has been launched on the issue, the agency reported, BTA reported.

The measures taken by the government are aimed at reducing water consumption and avoiding possible interruptions in water supply during the summer period.

At the end of March, the capacity of the island's water reserves was filled to only 31.5 percent, local authorities reported. Meanwhile, hopes for replenishment of the reserves are not high, since the rainy season on the island ends in May at the latest.

In an attempt to solve the problem, citizens were urged to use water conscientiously. It is recommended to take short showers, use dishwashers and washing machines only when full, and not use the water to wash cars.

It is also planned to build new seawater desalination stations. Currently, 12 stations are operating on the island, but they are not enough, according to mayors of tourist resorts in the southern part of the island, DPA adds.
