Search operations at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim plant in Tatarstan, where a fire broke out in March, have ended, the press service of Sibur, the company that owns the plant, reported.

Twelve deaths have been confirmed - 11 employees and one firefighter who participated in extinguishing the fire.

The previous day, the company reported 11 deaths and the search for one missing employee.

The tragedy occurred on March 31. Sibur attributed the fire to an equipment malfunction. According to eyewitnesses, shortly before the fire, an explosion occurred at the plant.

According to preliminary data, the cause was a technical malfunction - an explosion of a "dehumidifier" in one of the workshops. Official authorities point to a malfunction in the operation of the equipment.

The explosion was extremely powerful, followed by an intense fire, which forced the mobilization of significant rescue forces.

The plant is located in the industrial zone of the city of Nizhnekamsk and is the largest petrochemical enterprise in Europe.

The incident injured 72 people, hospitalized in Nizhnekamsk, Moscow and Kazan. Some of the injured are in serious condition.

A mourning period was declared in the region.

The Investigative Committee has opened a case for violations of industrial safety requirements at hazardous production facilities.
