Two police officers were injured and three people were neutralized by shooting during an attempt to break into the Israeli Consulate in Istanbul, the online publication “Hürriyet“ reported, citing information from the Istanbul police. One of the alleged attackers died from gunshot wounds, BTA reports.
The three suspects tried to enter the building, but the police and security at the entrance became suspicious of their intentions and noticed that they were holding long-barreled weapons. After the police ordered them to stop, the three attackers opened fire. Immediately afterwards, the police shot two of them, but the three suspects hid behind a nearby car and fired again at the police.
After the police returned fire a second time, the third perpetrator was also wounded. Numerous police teams were sent to the scene.
Currently, security measures in the area have been tightened, although they had been increased before the incident due to the risk of incidents around the Israeli Consulate amid events in the Middle East.
