At least 30 people have died in a stampede near the historic Laferrière Citadel in rural northern Haiti, local newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported, citing Jean-Henri Petit, head of the civil protection department for Haiti's Nord department.
According to the newspaper, on April 11, one of the Caribbean republic's most famous landmarks, the Laferrière Citadel, built in the early 19th century, was packed with visitors for national holidays.
The large crowd led to a stampede in which, according to preliminary estimates, 30 people died.
Local authorities announced that they have launched an investigation into the incident and do not rule out the possibility of more victims, notes Le Nouvelliste.
