Today is a day for celebration, said the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on the occasion of the results of the elections in Hungary. She expressed her expectation that the EC will soon start working with the new government in Budapest, reports BTA.
The people of Hungary demanded a return to the European path, this is a victory for fundamental freedoms, said Von der Leyen. She compared yesterday's vote to the Hungarian resistance in 1958 and the fall of the communist regime in the country in 1989. She said the election result, which led to the ouster of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, makes the EU stronger and more united.
We will start working with the new government as soon as possible to make rapid progress for the benefit of the Hungarians, said von der Leyen. There is a lot of work to do, but we must also learn from the lessons - for example, on the move to qualified majority voting in European foreign policy decisions, she said.
