US President Donald Trump's approval rating remains at its lowest level of his current term, as many Americans question his temperament and mental acuity amid the war with Iran and his conflict with Pope Leo, a Reuters/Ipsos poll showed.

The six-day poll, which ended on Monday, showed that 36% approve of Trump's job performance - unchanged from the previous month. His highest approval rating during his term was 47% shortly after he took office on January 20, 2025.

Trump has been under pressure since his administration and Israel launched a war with Iran in February, sending gasoline prices soaring. Approval of the U.S. strikes on Iran is at 36%, up from 35% in an April 10-12 poll. Just 25% believe the strikes will make America safer, and just 26% say the military action was worth the cost.

The survey was conducted online among 4,557 American adults, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

Many, including some Republicans, have expressed concern about the 79-year-old president's behavior after a series of sharp outbursts. Only 26% describe him as "level-headed". Among Republicans, 53% agree, while 46% disagree. Among Democrats, just 7% think he is balanced.

In recent weeks, Trump has posted threats on social media to destroy Iranian civilization and attacked Pope Leo as weak on crime after the pontiff criticized the war. Earlier this year, he alarmed allies by not ruling out the use of military force to annex Greenland.

About 51% of Americans believe Trump's mental acuity has "worsened" in the past year, including 14% of Republicans, 54% of independents and 85% of Democrats.

Americans view Pope Leo more favorably than the president - 60% have a favorable opinion of the pope compared to 36% of Trump.

Approval of Trump's handling of the cost of living is at 26% - the lowest level ever. Only 16% support the US possibly withdrawing from NATO.
