Costa: EU must invest in nuclear and renewable energy for security - 1

European Council President Antonio Costa called on the European Union to invest more in renewable sources and nuclear energy to avoid future energy shocks, BTA reports.

Costa made the statement during the Delphi Economic Forum in Delphi, where he participated in a discussion with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

In his words, “the only structural solution for Europe is to develop its own sources of energy production“, emphasizing the need to modernize networks and use resources more efficiently.

Costa also emphasized geopolitical risks, stating that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons, and that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz should be guaranteed. He added that the EU will continue to maintain relations with the US, despite differences.

For his part, Mitsotakis stressed that nuclear energy should be part of Europe's energy mix and called for a more pragmatic approach, including the preparation of a “Plan B“ in the event of a deepening crisis in the Persian Gulf.

The forum, which is being held from 22 to 25 April, brings together hundreds of participants from politics, business and academia, with the main topics being geopolitics, economics and technological change.
