Orban announced that he is giving up his seat as a member of the Hungarian parliament, but intends to remain as the leader of Fidesz, which is moving into opposition.
The outgoing prime minister lost the parliamentary elections in Hungary, held on April 12, 2026. After 16 years of continuous rule, his Fidesz party suffered a heavy defeat by the pro-European TISA party, led by Peter Magyar.
As the leader of the Fidesz list, he automatically received a parliamentary mandate.
Peter Magyar's party won a constitutional majority (141 out of 199 seats).
Orban's party remains in opposition with a significantly reduced representation — around 52 – 54 seats.
The leader took full responsibility for the failure and called an extraordinary Fidesz congress on April 28, 2026 to reorganize the party.
