The U.S. military currently has no defenses against hypersonic weapons and advanced cruise missiles, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy Mark Berkowitz told a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.
During a meeting on the next-generation U.S. missile defense system, Gold Dome, senators asked him to describe the country's current missile defense capabilities.
"We currently have a very limited, ground-based, single-stage defense system specifically designed to repel small-scale surprise attacks from North Korea," he replied he.
“We have very limited capabilities to counter any other ballistic missile attacks, and we also have no defenses today against hypersonic weapons or cruise missiles, if we're talking about advanced cruise missiles“, the assistant secretary said.
