The expansion of the border wall in the southern part of the United States, initiated by the administration of US President Donald Trump, has damaged an archaeological site of Indians in Arizona, The Washington Post reported, citing archaeologists and local residents.

Construction equipment used to build part of the wall on the US-Mexico border has destroyed an intaglio (rock carving) resembling a fish dating back at least a thousand years. It was more than 60-70 meters long.

Lorraine Marquez Eiler, an elder of the Hia-sed O'odham tribe, said the damage occurred last week.

“It's like someone came to Washington and started destroying all the places that are revered in the United States - that's what happened to us,“ Marquez Eiler said.

The site is located in the Cabeza Prieta National Park Reserve. A spokesman for the U.S. Department of the Interior confirmed the damage to the archaeological site.
