China is in favor of the immediate opening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of restrictions on both sides, China's Permanent Representative to the UN Fu Cong told reporters.
“China believes that the Strait of Hormuz should be opened as soon as possible. This applies to both sides. Iran should lift restrictions on oil trade, and the United States should lift the maritime blockade“, the diplomat said at a briefing on Beijing's assumption of the UN Security Council presidency in May.
According to him, the resumption of shipping in the strait is key to the stability of global energy markets. The permanent representative stressed that further escalation could negatively affect the global economy.
China does not cooperate with Iran militarily and rejects such accusations, Fu Cong said.
“There is no military cooperation between China and Iran, and we are aware of the accusations made by some US officials,“ he said.
On May 26, China will hold a high-level open debate at the UN Security Council on strengthening the central role of the organization and respecting its charter, the diplomat said.
“China will convene a high-level open debate on May 26 on respecting the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and strengthening the international system based on the central role of the UN. The meeting will be chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. We hope that this meeting will provide an opportunity for the parties to reaffirm their commitment to the purposes and principles of the Charter and to strengthen the central role of the UN in the international system,” he said.
