New Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko said in an interview with Bloomberg that Ukraine will likely seek new financing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Reuters reported. She also plans talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant about providing new financial assistance from Washington to Kiev, BTA reports.
“If the base scenario assumes that the war will continue into next year, then it is very likely that we will have a new IMF program“, Sviridenko said.
According to her, international donors have so far provided only about half of the $75 billion needed for the country's budget over the next two years.
The current IMF loan program for Ukraine, worth about $16 billion, expires in 2027. Given the uncertainty over the duration of the war, the possibility of a new program is expected to be discussed during a review of the current agreement scheduled for next month.
Sviridenko said that economic and military prospects would be among the main topics of her upcoming visit to Washington in August. The aim is to assess whether a new program would be justified and what its possible parameters would be.
