Stanislav Stoyanov requested a meeting with Ursula Von der Leyen: Bulgaria should postpone the euro - 1

The MEP from “Vazrazhdane”, chairman of the European party “Europe of Sovereign Nations” and vice-chairman of the eponymous parliamentary group, Stanislav Stoyanov, sent a letter to Ursula von der Leyen, requesting a personal meeting with her.

“The goal is to discuss the latest developments related to Bulgaria's planned accession to the eurozone in 2026. According to the latest data published by the National Statistical Institute, annual inflation reached 5.2% in November 2025, which shows that at the moment the convergence criterion in terms of inflation has not been met. In parallel, the Fiscal Council of Bulgaria warns of a high risk of the country being placed under an excessive deficit procedure in 2027, estimating the real budget deficit for 2026 at 8.1%, against the backdrop of ongoing political instability and the lack of an adopted state budget for the coming year.”, the letter says.

In this personal meeting, if it takes place, Stanislav Stoyanov intends to familiarize the President of the European Commission not only with the data, but also with the attitudes of Bulgarian society. In this context, he welcomes an exchange of views on the possibility of considering a one-year postponement of Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone, with a view to ensuring fiscal stability and maintaining confidence in the accession process.

We recall that Stanislav Stoyanov is the Bulgarian MEP who filed a request with the European Court in Luxembourg to annul Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone from January 2026. This is another step that “Vazrazhdane“ is taking in the just fight to preserve the Bulgarian lev.

The Court of Justice of the European Union in Luxembourg has appointed a panel to hear Stoyanov's claim and a second appeal filed by a group of 13 Bulgarian citizens. This means that, according to the Court's Secretariat, the appeals are not manifestly inadmissible - the first necessary step for the case to proceed. The deadline for the Council of the European Union to send its written response is currently running. The court will then decide whether the proceedings should continue with an oral phase.
