The fire in the country is gradually localized in key regions, according to current data as of 18:50 on August 23, 2026. In the Blagoevgrad region, the situation has stabilized after the rapid intervention of firefighters and volunteers, while in Southeast Bulgaria the teams remain on their toes due to the complicated situation around the largest military training ground in our country.
Success in Garmen and mastery in Kresna
The fire in the hard-to-reach forest massif between the villages of Skrebatno and Baldevo in the municipality of Garmen has been completely extinguished. According to data from the Southwestern State Enterprise, provided to NOVA (source: nova.bg/news), the fire has destroyed nearly 90 acres of forest territory, consisting mainly of coppice oak, as well as crops of white and black pine. Employees of the State Forestry Enterprise-Garmen, volunteers and the rain that fell in the afternoon helped to stop the flames. Before that, around noon, another fire in the area was extinguished – over the village of Vlahi in the municipality of Kresna, which was caused by lightning (source: bnrnews.bg).
Damage control in Simeonovgradsko
The fire in the municipality of Simeonovgrad, which broke out on Saturday in the lands of the villages of Dryanovo, Tyanevo and Troyan, has already been completely localized, BTA reported (source: bta.bg). A total of 700 acres of land have burned, including 100 acres of lowland forest, 100 acres of stubble and 500 acres of dry grass. Fire crews from the RD PBZN - Haskovo are on duty on site to prevent possible secondary outbreaks. Meanwhile, the local fire that broke out later between the villages of Troyan and Pyasychevo was also quickly brought under control by the redirected forces.
Critical situation around four Haskovo villages and training ground “Koren“
The situation remains very complicated on the territory of the Haskovo Regional Administration, where a large fire is raging between the four villages of Dinevo, Lyubenovo, Koren and Krivo Pole. The fire has also entered the perimeter of the largest military training ground in Bulgaria - – “Koren“ (source: btvnovinite.bg).
Firefighters are fighting the flames in strong winds and rugged terrain. Due to the danger of affecting nearby forest areas, a military helicopter "Cougar" was also involved by air. Currently, 15 fire trucks, heavy equipment (bulldozer) and volunteers with water carriers are on the front line. The readiness of the neighboring directorates in Kardzhali and Stara Zagora has also been increased. At this stage, there is no direct danger to the population, but in the Haskovo region there remains an extreme risk of new fires breaking out due to high summer temperatures.
