Former number one in tennis Ana Ivanovic has filed for divorce from former German international Bastian Schweinsteiger, who shone with the Bayern Munich and Manchester United teams, reports sportal.bg.

The 38-year-old Ivanovic, originally from Serbia and a former winner of the French Open, had a glittering career that included an Australian Open final and a Wimbledon semi-final. After retiring from active sports, she began a relationship with Bastian Schweinsteiger, whom she married in 2016.

However, according to German media outlet BILD, Ana filed for divorce in November at a district court in Munich, after the couple had already separated earlier in the year. The publication added that she had also filed for child support in Palma de Mallorca.

Ivanović lives in the Spanish city with her three sons – Luka, Leon and Theo. In July, her spokesman Christian Serz revealed that the couple had split due to “irreconcilable differences“.

German publications reported in the summer that the 2014 World Cup winner with Germany had been spotted kissing an alleged new partner, with BILD adding that their relationship began in the summer of 2024.

Meanwhile, Bunte magazine claimed that Ivanovic was ready to forgive Schweinsteiger, but he said he wanted to “live freely“. The couple met in 2014 in New York through a mutual friend, former basketball player Steffen Hehmann.

Speaking of their relationship, the German admitted: “I wasn't that good at English when we met, so at first I listened to Ana a lot. I was a bit defensive and watched what was coming. It was love at first sight. You feel the special moments and you can recognize them when you look deep into someone's eyes – that's exactly how it was with me“.

The marriage proposal was made in the same park in London where the movie – “Notting Hill“ was filmed. The couple's last public appearance was at the Laver Cup in September 2024. However, later in the year they shared photos from their visit to a Christmas market.

Schweinsteiger spent most of his career at Bayern Munich, but moved to the “Red Devils“ in 2015. He stayed in Manchester for two seasons, making 18 Premier League appearances and scoring one goal. In 2016, the former Germany international moved to Chicago Fire of MLS, where he finished his career in 2019.
