Ukrainian Oleh Doroshchuk became the world high jump champion at the indoor championships held in the Polish city of Torun. The European outdoor champion was the only one who reached the finish line without a mistake and cleared the 230 cm height, BTA reported.
Defending champion Sanghyeok Woo from the Republic of Korea managed to clear 226 cm, which was enough for a bronze medal. He shared it with Raymond Richards from Jamaica, who cleared the same height. Richards was third at the previous indoor world championships, but then he cleared 228 cm.
The surprise came from Mexican Eric Portillo, who jumped 230 cm on his third attempt, winning silver in the event. This is also Mexico's first medal in the high jump at a major event.
The Belgian team won the first-ever mixed 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:15.60, which is the best indoor time of all time. The success for Belgium was brought by Mirt van der Schoote, Sarah Reiffenrath, Jonathan Sakoor and Ilana Hansens.
The silver medal was won by the Spanish team, which gave a time of 3:19.96 minutes. This happened after the Jamaican team was disqualified for an incorrect relay.
Poland won the bronze medal after the Jamaican team was disqualified, and this is the country's first medal in a relay race. The team gave a time of 3:17.44 minutes. "It would have been better to win the medal on the track, but clearly there was a violation that deserved a disqualification. This medal is a dream come true. "This was my first major championship and it was an incredible experience to run with Cajetan, Ania and Justyna," commented young Pole Marcin Karolewski.
