Washington has asked European allies to significantly increase their contribution to NATO's conventional defense capabilities by 2027, otherwise the United States may stop participating in some defense coordination mechanisms. This was reported by "Reuters", citing its own sources familiar with the talks.
According to the agency, this was discussed at a meeting in Washington, which was attended by Pentagon officials dealing with NATO policy and several delegations from Europe.
Conventional defense capabilities include everything except nuclear weapons. According to "Reuters", the officials did not explain how Europe's progress in this area will be measured. It is also unclear whose position the 2027 deadline reflects - that of the Trump administration or that of some Pentagon officials.
Several European officials have noted that such a deadline is unrealistic, despite the pressure the United States is exerting.
NATO, the Pentagon and the White House declined to comment to the agency on Washington's proposed deadline.
The White House has spoken about the need for Europe to contribute more to NATO since the beginning of Donald Trump's current term. US Vice President J.D. Vance has been particularly vocal on this issue.
