“I believe that we should delay time and improve our position as much as possible“, he said.
Otherwise, said Kostenko, Ukraine will face unfavorable peace conditions.
US President's special representative Keith Kellogg said that the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine is “close”, but two key issues - the status of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the territories of the Donetsk region - are preventing an agreement from being reached. In early December, Washington and Kiev held new consultations, where the parties discussed security measures and the parameters of a future settlement.
According to Kellogg, “the last 10 meters to the finish line are the most difficult“ and it is the uncertainty surrounding the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the Donetsk region that prevents the parties from moving on to the final stage of negotiations. He noted that once these issues are resolved, “the rest will fall into place“.
American representatives, including US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have been actively discussing a possible settlement plan in recent weeks, but Washington emphasizes that a solution to the territorial issue must be found by the parties through negotiations. As Axios reported, the US administration is considering several options for the future status of the territories, but a final agreed formula has not yet been reached.
