US President Donald Trump believes that the tariffs he has imposed have halved the country's trade deficit.
“Recently released data shows that tariffs have halved the US trade deficit“, he wrote in Truth Social. The American leader noted that this figure will only increase in the future.
On December 9, Trump said that a possible restriction on tariffs by the US Supreme Court would be the greatest threat to national security.
On April 2, the US president announced the imposition of tariffs on products from 185 countries and territories. The US leader later adjusted tariff rates for a number of countries. The United States will take retaliatory measures if the European Union continues to restrict American companies, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced. "If the EU and its member states insist on continuing discriminatory measures to restrict and hinder the competitiveness of American service providers, the United States will have no choice but to begin using all available tools to counteract these unjustified measures," he wrote in X. According to him, US law allows for the imposition of fees and restrictions on foreign services if necessary. The United States will take a similar approach to other countries that "follow an EU-style strategy in this area."
As previously reported, the US administration plans to implement the next phase of trade agreements with the European Union and conclude a "binding written agreement" with the community. The White House "intends to resolve outstanding issues", including the digital services tax that Brussels plans to impose on American IT companies, discrimination against American companies and the pricing of pharmaceutical products. At the same time, a US official said that European demands for further tariff reductions "are not consistent" with the progress of negotiations.
