Former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, who is currently under house arrest, was taken to hospital with abdominal pain, the newspaper “La Nación“ reported, citing sources.
According to them, doctors who responded to the call examined the former head of state in the apartment where she is serving her sentence for corruption, and decided to hospitalize her. Fernandez de Kirchner was diagnosed with appendicitis in the hospital and underwent surgery.
Fernandez de Kirchner was president of Argentina from December 2007 to December 2015. From 2019 to 2023, she was vice president. In December 2022, a court sentenced her to six years in prison for corruption related to infrastructure projects in the province of Santa Cruz. Prosecutors believe that as a result of a criminal conspiracy, most of the contracts were awarded to companies owned by businessman Lázaro Baez, who has been convicted of money laundering. The former head of state denies his guilt and considers himself a victim of political persecution.
On June 10, the Supreme Court upheld the lower court's decision. The court also banned Fernández de Kirchner from holding public office. Due to the age of the 72-year-old former head of state and the increased risks she would face in prison as a former president, the court replaced her sentence with house arrest.
