It is difficult to disagree with experts who claim that US President Donald Trump will go down in history of the United States and the world if he takes control of Greenland. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by "Reuters".
He clarified that he is not discussing whether such a step would be good or bad - he is simply stating a fact.
Trump has repeatedly insisted that he will not settle for anything less than ownership of Greenland - an autonomous territory of Denmark. He pointed out that if the United States does not take control of Greenland, then Russia or China will.
Asked to comment on Trump's words about the alleged Russian threat, Peskov noted that there has been a lot of "alarming information" recently, but the Kremlin will not comment on the alleged Russian plans for Greenland.
"Here it is perhaps possible to abstract from whether this is good or bad, whether it will meet the parameters of international law or not," he commented.
"There are international experts who believe that by resolving the issue of Greenland's accession, Trump will certainly go down in history. And not only in the history of the United States, but also in world history," Peskov stressed.
The leaders of both Denmark and Greenland are adamant that the island is not for sale and does not want to be part of the United States.
Last week, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it was unacceptable for the West to continue to claim that Russia and China threaten Greenland, and stressed that the crisis over the territory shows the double standards of Western powers that claim moral superiority.
