The coldest morning in 60 years was recorded in Romania on Sunday, the country's National Meteorological Administration reported. The lowest temperature was in Miercurea Ciuc in central Romania, where minus 21 degrees were measured, BTA reported.

A total of four daily temperature records were recorded in Romania's northernmost city - Darabani, as well as in Stănca Ștefanești, Gura Porticei and Oltenita.

In Bucharest on Sunday, the mercury in thermometers dropped to minus 10 degrees Celsius. The city's Emergency Service reported that nearly 100 people were injured due to the cold and ice in the Romanian capital over the weekend. They have sprains, strains, fractures and injuries due to falls, and nine cases of hypothermia have also been registered.

Meteorologists warn that the coming days in Romania will be even colder. A yellow code for dangerous weather will be in effect on Tuesday. Temperatures between minus 8 and minus 20 degrees are expected. Nowhere in the country will there be values above zero, with the coldest being in the regions of Moldova, Transylvania, Dobrudja, in the east in Muntenia, as well as in southern Oltenia.

The bad weather continues to claim victims. In Arad County, a driver lost control of his car on an icy road while overtaking and ended up in the oncoming lane, causing an accident. The man was taken to hospital, where he later died. The road had not been treated with de-icing materials, PRO TV reported in a report on the subject.

In Iași, a 45-year-old man died in hospital after being admitted with severe hypothermia. He was found in an unheated home with a body temperature of 23 degrees.

In the village of Izvoarele, populated mainly by ethnic Bulgarians, social workers visited lonely elderly people. Some have only a few days' worth of firewood and have barely survived the freezing nights of the past week.
