Hungarian government has begun a systematic review of EU powers - 1

The Hungarian government has begun a systematic review of the powers of the European Union, said Minister for European Affairs János Boka during a conference in Budapest, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported, quoted by BTA.

According to him, this review is necessary because of the "disguised expansion" of the EU's powers. "This is a question of sovereignty", Boka emphasized, pointing out that the European Union is built on the principle that member states themselves decide in which areas they wish to cooperate through common institutions. "When decisions are taken out of the hands of the member states, national sovereignty is seriously undermined", he added.

The minister pointed out that EU law is increasingly encroaching on areas such as education, culture and family policy, and the existing protective mechanisms are not working effectively, which is why new solutions and tools are needed.

According to Boka, the aim of the investigation is to reveal precisely this "covert expansion" of the EU's powers in areas such as economic policy, energy, migration, the rule of law, education, culture and family policy.

In addition, the analysis will seek an explanation for why the existing EU mechanisms for protecting the powers of the member states are not functioning in practice.
