The Chinese coast guard has rescued 13 people from a foreign cargo ship that capsized in the South China Sea, the Pengpai newspaper reported, citing the country's coast guard.

“At 1:34 a.m. local time on January 23, the China Coast Guard received a report from the Sansha City Search and Rescue Center in southern Hainan Province that the cargo ship capsized approximately 55 nautical miles northwest of the Huangyan Reef in the South China Sea.

There were 21 crew members on board, all Filipino nationals. Two patrol ships were immediately dispatched to the area to conduct search and rescue operations. "So far, 13 people have been rescued and the search is ongoing," the statement said.
