Israeli Defense Minister Threatens Iran: Attacks Will Escalate and Expand - 1

Israel has launched a new wave of strikes against Iran and threatened that its attacks will "escalate and expand", the "Associated Press" reports.

The threat comes after US President Donald Trump said talks to end the war are going well and gave Tehran more time to open the Strait of Hormuz, despite no signs that Iran is backing down.

With stock markets reeling and the economic fallout from the war extending far beyond the Middle East, Trump is under increasing pressure to end Iranian control of the strait, a strategic waterway through which a fifth of the world's oil normally passes.

The United States has offered Iran a 15-point ceasefire proposal that includes giving up control of the strait, but has also ordered thousands of additional troops to the region - likely in preparation for a military attempt to wrest the waterway from Iran's firm control.

With Trump's deadline for Iran to open the strait looming, after he threatened to destroy the Islamic Republic's power plants, he today extended his deadline to April 6, saying talks to end the conflict were going "very well." Iran, however, says it is not participating in any negotiations.

Air raid sirens were heard in Israel, and the military said it was working to intercept Iranian missiles, which is a daily occurrence. Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, said Iran "will pay a high, growing price for this war crime."

"Despite warnings, the firing continues," Katz said. "And therefore, the attacks in Iran will escalate and expand to additional targets and areas that help the regime build and operate weapons against Israeli citizens."

The Israeli military said its strike today targeted sites "in the heart of Tehran" used by Iran to produce ballistic missiles and other weapons. Missile launchers and storage facilities in western Iran were also hit.
