The US Department of Defense is preparing for a possible ground operation against Iran that could last weeks, the "Washington Post" newspaper reported.
According to US officials familiar with the matter, the potential operation will not be a large-scale invasion.
It will involve limited actions taken by special operations teams and infantry, and will target areas such as Kharg Island and the Strait of Hormuz.
US President Donald Trump has not yet made a decision on whether to approve the campaign.
It was previously reported that the Pentagon is engaged in "detailed" preparations for a ground operation in Iran involving the US Army's Global Response Force and the Marine Corps' Maritime Expeditionary Unit.
Previously, it was claimed that the US was discussing new options for delivering a "final strike" against Iran, including deploying ground forces there and launching intensive bombing.
