The UN Security Council will meet in an emergency meeting today after the deaths of three Indonesian peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, a zone of clashes between Israel and the pro-Iranian movement "Hezbollah", reported Agence France-Presse, BTA reported.

France requested the meeting, which will begin at 10:00 a.m. Eastern Time (14:00 GMT), at a time when Israel ordered its army to expand the "security zone" in Lebanon, where it is carrying out massive strikes and a deep ground incursion.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) said it was investigating the incident after two Indonesian peacekeepers were killed "by an explosion of unknown origin that destroyed their vehicle near Bani Hayyan" on the border. Two other peacekeepers were wounded, the international force said yesterday.

The UN mission UNIFIL, which has been in southern Lebanon since 1978, when Israel first invaded, earlier reported the death of another peacekeeper of the same nationality on Sunday in similar circumstances on the border with Israel.

The Israeli army said today it was investigating the incidents, urging "not to assume" that it was responsible.
