A Hezbollah MP confirmed that his faction rejects any direct talks between Lebanon and Israel, Agence France-Presse reported, after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his intention to start direct talks with Beirut, BTA reported.
"We reiterate that we reject any negotiations between Lebanon and the Israeli enemy, as well as the need to adhere to national principles, led by the Israeli withdrawal, the cessation of hostilities and the return of residents to their villages and cities," Ali Fayyad said in a statement carried by the Iranian-backed Islamist movement's media outlet.
"Hezbollah" calls on the Lebanese government to demand a ceasefire "as a precondition before taking any other steps", Fayyad added, after a Lebanese government official said Beirut was demanding a ceasefire before any negotiations with Israel.
