BRC: Aid to those in need should not be used for political suggestions

"In recent weeks, there has been a trend in which, through facts taken out of context or outdated images, attempts are being made to suggest that the provision of food is tied to political messages. Any suggestion of the "bread or the ballot" type is in complete contradiction with our values. These actions constitute abuse of an established humanitarian organization,” the official statement says.

BRC: Aid to those in need should not be used for political suggestions - 1

The Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) has issued an official position in which it categorically rejects any attempts to accuse the organization of participating in political agitation, Nova TV reports. The humanitarian organization points out that in various settlements there is a trend of spreading false claims and manipulative suggestions related to their activities.
“In recent weeks, there has been a trend in which, through facts taken out of context or outdated images, attempts are being made to suggest that the provision of food is tied to political messages. Any suggestion of the type “bread or ballot“ is in complete contradiction with our values. These actions constitute abuse of an established humanitarian organization”, the official statement says.
The Red Cross emphasizes that they work in strict accordance with the international principles of neutrality and impartiality, which guarantee that support reaches people without any form of political influence.

„The activities of providing food packages are carried out according to clearly defined rules. The lists of those in need are compiled and provided by the Social Assistance Agency. Only our employees and volunteers participate in the process itself, and the intervention of political entities is not allowed”, the organization explains.

The Bulgarian Red Cross calls on all political forces and institutions to be responsible and refrain from using humanitarian aid for political purposes. The position also notes that such campaigns harm over 530 thousand needy Bulgarian citizens who rely on the organization's support.
