Borislav Sarafov resigned. Three days ago, Bulgarian society clearly stated that it will not tolerate institutions used as a shield for impunity, political dependencies and corruption schemes, cruelly punishing GERB and DPS at the ballot box - the personifications of this conquest of the judicial system. Let's be honest - people like Sarafov do not resign to protect their good name or to allow the "democratic process to work". This was commented by the leader of "Save Sofia" Boris Bonev added:
If Sarafov was concerned about his reputation, he would not have taken root in a post that both Parliament, the judiciary and the Constitutional Court told him was not his. People who are the institutional facade of a conquered state resign when they expect to be cooked or when the new mafia allows the old one to take its waiters home without a fight. Sarafov is part of a string of obedient executors who occupied key positions in the judiciary to ensure that the interests of corrupt officials remain unharmed.
This has led to a lack of justice, a sense of impunity and a severe erosion of trust in the state. Therefore, today it is not enough to simply replace one name with another. A real reboot of the system with clear rules, independent institutions, transparent appointments and real responsibility for abuses is needed. Bulgaria needs not cosmetics, but a deep cleansing of the addictions accumulated over decades. But after this restart, we should not allow the same practices to return in a new form and with new faces. Save Sofia, we believe that judicial reform is part of the larger battle for a normal European state - a state in which the law applies to everyone and the institutions serve the citizens. It remains to be seen whether this moment will be used for real change or for another replacement. Sofia and Bulgaria deserve the former.
