After we insisted on Borislav Sarafov's resignation for a very long time, including this morning, it has finally become a fact. This was commented by the co-chairman of “Yes, Bulgaria“ Bozhidar Bozhanov on the BNR “Horizont“ program.
According to him, Sarafov held the position not by force of law, but based on Peevski's will. “After this will was eliminated by the people at the ballot boxes and they showed that there were 160 votes for changing this model, this brick of it fell today“, Bozhanov emphasized.
He emphasized that this is just the beginning. “Vanya Stefanova is also connected to Peevski, so we have no illusions that this resignation will lead to tectonic changes in the prosecutor's office. Such changes can only occur after the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council and its inspectorate. There is a majority of 160 votes for this“, he pointed out.
He described the reaction of GERB, who described Sarafov's resignation as "astonishing impudence and arrogance“. “The party and the people who defended him and claimed that he was a legitimate prosecutor general, are now saying that his resignation is overdue. Apparently in the hope of participating in a regrouping. We owe it to society that there should be no such regrouping“, said Bozanov.
According to him, the resignation is the result of accumulated public and political pressure. “Our efforts, as well as those of Minister Yankulov, led to bringing this topic into the focus of public attention. It was also a pre-election topic. After the citizens spoke out so categorically, it is obvious that this resignation is a coordinated decision between Peevski, Borisov and Sarafov.“
Bozhanov insisted that after the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council and inspectorate, a thorough check of Sarafov's property status be carried out. “According to data from investigative journalists, it seems that the man has become a real estate agency. Let's see where this money comes from and what dependencies he creates“, he added.
He also raised the issue of vote-buying files. “What happened to them and why was there an umbrella from the prosecutor's office over the vote buyers? Did Sarafov not stay in this position to try to preserve the possibility that GERB and MRF together will have 80 votes and block the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council? We will insist on such checks.“, commented Bozanov.
“It is up to the National Assembly to elect a new Supreme Judicial Council, in which people will be selected according to clear rules and criteria, so as to guarantee professionalism, backbone and morality. Only with such people will a new prosecutor general be elected, who is not just another convenient one“, he also said.
In conclusion, Bozanov emphasized the role of PP-DB in the next parliament: “We will be a strong opposition. We will monitor where wrong steps are made and good governance practices are violated and we will not remain silent. Because it is always very tempting, when someone has an absolute majority, to use elements of the model. I'm not saying that will happen, but our role will be to ensure that it doesn't.“
