The Gardener and Death by Georgi Gospodinov became the book of the year in Spain - 1

The novel “The Gardener and Death“ by Georgi Gospodinov, translated by Maria Vutova, won the Grand Prize for Best Fiction Book for 2025 of the Association of Independent Bookstores in Spain. This was announced by the author himself on his Facebook page, quoted by BTA.

„I find this to be one of the best awards, because it is voted for by booksellers from over 1,100 bookstores throughout Spain“, commented Gospodinov.

The Spanish publishers of the novel from Impedimenta also noted in a Facebook post that today is particularly important for them, as the book has received the TodosTusLibros award for best fiction book for 2025, awarded by independent bookstores throughout Spain.

According to them, since its appearance in bookstores, the novel has taken an extraordinary path - booksellers recommend it enthusiastically, readers give it as gifts, and critics define it as one of the books of the year. The publishers note that the book found its way from person to person and from conversation to conversation - as happens with works that touch something very deep.

They also emphasize that the novel was written from the love of a son for his father, from memories and from that tender silence that sometimes exists between the closest people. That is why the award means so much to them - because it is awarded by booksellers, who from the very first day put the book on their tables and supported it.

The Independent Booksellers Award (Premio TodosTusLibros) is a literary award in Spain that honors exceptional books recommended by independent booksellers, writes the award website.

It is awarded both in Spanish and to translated works that booksellers consider particularly valuable for readers. By selecting independent bookstores, the award promotes quality literature and supports the role of local bookstores in the literary life of the country.

Impedimenta Publishing House is an independent Spanish publishing house based in Madrid, founded in 2007 by Enrique Redel. Its main goal is to promote high-quality classical and contemporary literature, restoring fundamental works from the Western literary canon and presenting the so-called new contemporary classics.

It mainly publishes fiction with precise translations and aesthetically pleasing editions, designed both for reading and for preservation. In 2008, the publishing house received the National Award for Best Publishing Activity in the Field of Culture. Its catalog includes both established authors such as Penelope Fitzgerald and Iris Murdoch, as well as contemporary writers of recognized literary value.
