Cuba has accused the US of attempting to forcibly remove the Venezuelan government and described the increased presence of US military forces in the region as an aggressive threat, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
The removal of the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro would be an extremely dangerous and irresponsible move in violation of the UN Charter, Cuban Foreign Minister Burno Rodriguez said.
In recent weeks, the US has massed a military force in the Caribbean Sea unprecedented since the invasion of Panama in 1989, notes the "Guardian". Donald Trump's government is constantly increasing pressure on Maduro, whom it accuses of leading the "Cartel de los Soles" drug cartel ("Cartel of the Sun").
In August, the United States announced a $50 million reward for Maduro's arrest, and a few days ago Washington included the "Cartel de los Soles" on its list of foreign terrorist organizations. However, Trump has not made his intentions clear and says he is considering all options - from military intervention to a negotiated withdrawal of Maduro.
Reuters reported on Saturday that the United States is threatening to launch a new phase of operations related to Venezuela in the coming days.
Venezuelan citizens and military personnel will oppose any such attempt, Rodriguez said today. "We call on the people of the United States to stop this madness. The actions of the American government could cause the death of countless people and lead to an unimaginable scenario of violence and instability," the Cuban foreign minister added.
