Meloni asks Trump to reconsider the form of the "Peace Council" - 1

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has asked US President Donald Trump to reconsider the form of the “Peace Council“ for the reconstruction and governance of the Gaza Strip.

She made the statement at an intergovernmental summit with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to ANSA.

US President Donald Trump announced the creation of a “Peace Council“ in the Gaza Strip on January 16, 2026.

The creation of this organization was part of the US leader's peace plan for Gaza, along with the deployment of international forces. The council's goal as an international organization is to promote stability, ensure peace and restore “credible and legitimate“ governance in regions where conflicts have arisen or there is a risk of an outbreak.

Trump invited his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to join the “Peace Council“ on Gaza. Putin said he had received a personal invitation from the American leader and thanked the current US president.

Meloni had previously told EU leaders that fighting US President Donald Trump was a bad idea.

The Italian prime minister made the remarks during a closed-door meeting in Brussels, "Politico" reported, citing four of her sources.

She called for calm and for Trump not to be described as crazy or unpredictable.

Speaking after the summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed hope that European leaders had learned their lesson this week that opposing Trump on "firm" but "non-escalating" manner is an effective strategy that they should continue.
